Roadworks to the Arctic Circle

tk

Updated: Jun 15, 2019

The quality of Norway's road system is pretty impressive for such a vast country with a small population (~5 million). Building and maintaining the road/tunnels obviously needs to be carried out during the summer months. So, this is how I was confronted by mile upon mile of roadworks (>20 miles, if not more).

On my way to the Arctic Circle I'd planned my next fuel stop only to find the main E6 was shut and had to follow a diversion. The diversion went over a high mountain pass, with the obligatory impressive view from the top..

After the pass finally descended and rejoined the E6 I could see the reason for the diversion was work on a tunnel. Luckily, the garage was just outside the closed road section, as I had no other fuel option, phew.

The road surface is generally good, but you have to drive in the car tracks as the centre of the road is generally rippled. Sometimes the surface has a scoring (for drainage / grip?) in the direction of travel, but this is can be wavy rather than straight, This causes the bike to weave all over the place as it tracks the scoring.

The roadworks were officially 50 km/h, but in some places it was so bumpy (and deep gravel) I had to slow to 30 km/h as the bike was shaking itself to pieces. This wasn't what I needed at the end of a very long day, slow going and very tiring. But, I had the goal of the Arctic Circle to look forward to so pushed on through.

More roadworks.

And yet more.
